John Spencer has had a lifetime in the Dairy Industry. After graduating with an Engineering Degree, he joined J Sainsbury’s as a graduate buying trainee. There followed spells with Spar and Unigate, after which he set up his first company importing and packing predominantly soft continental cheese for the major multiples.
Following the sale of this business he combined with a French dairy co-operative to found Laita UK, taking it forward to become Eurilait – then and now one of the UK’s largest cheese importing and soft cheese cutting businesses.
Ten years later in 2003 he sold his interests in the company and bought the assets of The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company. This traditional cheddar cheese manufacturing business was in steep decline, but the prospect of resurrecting the only cheddar made in Cheddar proved irresistible. 16 years later he is still there. The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company has won several prestigious quality awards over the years including ‘Best Cheddar in Show’ at the World Cheese awards and continues to thrive. He is particularly pleased that he has been able to pass on the skills of traditional cheese making to a younger generation.
John is married to Katherine who is Technical Manager of the company; they have four children together.
